Surgical Tooth Extraction & Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Adelaide, SA

We offer concise and relevant advice regarding specific treatments that you may need, and efficient action if & when required.

Although dentists will make every effort to save a tooth, sometimes the only option is to remove a tooth. It may seem like a daunting prospect but with the right dentist and the right preparation and pain relief, the process is generally simple and quick.

Why do you need tooth extractions?

Some people may be lucky and never have a tooth removed. When teeth are broken or damaged, dentists generally try to fix them by fillings, crowns or procedures such as root canal. However if it a tooth is beyond repair, it may need to be extracted.

There are other reasons why you may need a tooth extraction. These include

  • Crowding in the mouth which blocks other teeth from coming through
  • Orthodontic works
  • Wisdom teeth causing pain or discomfort

How to prepare for a tooth extraction:

Your dentist will most likely identify and confirm the need for a tooth extraction by taking X rays of the damaged tooth and surrounding area.

You will be asked whether you want a local or a general anaesthetic – be sure to discuss the pros and cons of these with your dentist and ask for their advice on which they think may be most suitable for the complexity of the extraction.

If you are suffering from a cold on the day of the surgery, you should let your dentist know as the extraction may affect your sinuses. It’s also advisable not to smoke on the day of surgery.

Types of Tooth Extractions

The main two types of extraction are:

> Simple extractions: the dentist will loosen the tooth with an ‘elevator’ then use ‘forceps’ to remove the tooth. This is generally used for teeth that can be clearly seen in the mouth.
> Surgical extractions: the dentist will make a small cut in the gum and may need to remove some of the bone around the tooth to extract it. This is generally used for teeth that have broken off before the gum line or not even appeared in the mouth.

After your Tooth Extraction

Due to the nature of the procedures, you may experience a little pain or discomfort after your extraction. Your dentist will discuss the best ways to deal with this however many people find the below useful:

> Eating soft foods
> Putting an ice pack on the face to reduce swelling
> Taking anti inflammatory pain killers
> Resting

Lovely colourful clinic and friendly staff. The dentist took the time to explain the details of the treatment I needed and made sure I was aware of all my options before I decided on a plan. Really helpful! I can’t recommend them highly enough! 🙂
Luna K

My first time seeing Quynh. She was attentive, professional and I felt that she genuinely cares about her patients. I will do my regular check-up with her from now on. The clinic was also clean and organized. Thanks a lot!
