Fissure Seals
Fissure Seals in Adelaide
You want to do everything you can to protect your teeth. You may brush your teeth twice a day, keep up a regular cleaning habit and use floss and mouthwash wherever possible. However there’s an additional measure you can make to help prevent a build up of bacteria and potentially avoid decay.
What is a fissure seal?
Known as fissure seals, these are hard, protective plastic coatings that are painted onto the grooves (fissures) that occur naturally on the back teeth. These fissures often extend down into the tooth itself meaning that they are a common place for bacteria to enter and infections or decay to occur.
The fissure sealant helps to form a protective layer that prevents food and bacteria from becoming stuck in the grooves. A build up of food and bacteria in an unsealed tooth can regularly lead to tooth decay.
Which teeth require a fissure seal?
There are a number of scenarios when your dentist may recommend that you have a crown fitted. These include:
The most common teeth for dentists to put a fissure seal on are usually at the back of the mouth. It is the molars and pre molars, which are generally sealed by dentists due to their role as the main teeth that chew food.
Dentists often recommend that children have their back teeth sealed with fissure sealant at a young age in an attempt to stop them from developing fillings when they are older. However well you clean and maintain your teeth, it is very difficult to clean the fissures thoroughly therefore sealing them can help to avoid future problems with these teeth.
Children generally have their back molars sealed at around 6 or 7 years old and their other molars sealed when they begin to appear in the mouth.
The Fissure Sealing Procedure:
Sealing fissures is a relatively simple and pain free procedure. Your dentist will check the fissures for decay and thoroughly clean the tooth surface. A special solution will be applied to ensure it is free from bacteria, and then the coating is applied.
Once the fissure seals are complete, you must continue to brush and clean your teeth regularly to maintain optimal dental hygiene.
